Mulherin Park Redevelopment to Commence 14 July

NQBP has announced the redevelopment works for Mulherin Park will begin on from 14 July and be ongoing to the beginning of next year.

“We are very keen to commence the redevelopment and implement ideas received from the Mackay community during the consultation process,” said Acting Deputy CEO of North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation, Mr Jeffrey Stewart-Harris.

“Mulherin Park carries generations of memories for the people of Mackay and it is important that we preserve the heritage for future generations to enjoy,” said Mr Stewart-Harris.

Public suggestions resulting from the consultation period include increased shade, open space and conservation areas, the updating of recreational facilities and the retention of the float characters such as Fred Flintstone and Snoopy.

“NQBP is committed to providing an updated facility that the community of Mackay will enjoy into the future,” said Mr Stewart-Harris. “This means that 70 percent of the area will be retained as parkland, including revitalisation of the underutilised southern section of Mulherin Park.”

“In following NQBP’s commitment to achieving environmentally sustainable best practice, the upgrade will include features such as on site bio retention areas and endemic planting,” said Mr Stewart-Harris.

“We anticipate that over time the site will be able to support bird life and robust plant communities. We also intend to source all materials locally including hardscape, furniture and planting,” said Mr Stewart-Harris.
Mulherin Park is named after ancestors of the current State Member for Mackay, the Hon. Tim Mulherin MP. J.M. Mulherin was a member of the Mackay Harbour Board from 1927 to 1951 and Chairman of the Board between 1927 and 1931. A monument will be erected in the park in commemoration.

NQBP intends to keep some of the park accessible throughout the construction process. To ensure public safety some sections of the park may be inaccessible during construction, including the amenities. There will also be times when the whole park is closed to enable civil works to be carried out such as drainage. The community will be kept informed.
